LE PEPS

Le Pavillon de l’Éducation physique et des sports (PEPS) de l’Université Laval a été inauguré en janvier 1971. Construit et financé en très grande partie grâce à un investissement institutionnel, sa vocation première était alors centrée sur l’enseignement et la recherche de même que sur la satisfaction des besoins des membres de la communauté universitaire aux plans de la pratique du sport et de l’activité physique.

Rapidement, l’Université s’est associée avec divers organismes du milieu dans l’accueil et l’organisation d’événements sportifs et non sportifs d’envergure. Véritable chef de file dans les domaines de la sensibilisation, de l’éducation et de la pratique du sport et de l’activité physique, le PEPS est un rouage important sur la scène sportive régionale et une référence reconnue partout au pays.

Depuis près de 40 ans, le PEPS offre une programmation diversifiée qui répond aux besoins des personnes de tout âge. Avec ses cinq gymnases, dont un gymnase triple, son stade couvert, sa piscine olympique, sa salle d’entraînement, ses terrains de tennis, son champ de pratique extérieur de golf, ses terrains de soccer, de softball, de volleyball, ses patinoires et bien d’autres installations, ce complexe sportif universitaire est l’endroit incontournable pour s’adonner à la pratique régulière de l’activité physique et du sport.

PROJET D’AGRANDISSEMENT DES INFRASTRUCTURES DU PEPS

Devant la croissance exceptionnelle du nombre d’adeptes de certains sports depuis les dernières années et devant l’augmentation des demandes en ce qui a trait à des événements spéciaux, sportifs ou non, le PEPS augmentera sa superficie d’ici le début de l’année 2013.

Des installations de haut niveau viendront répondre à ces besoins croissants. Un centre de soccer / football intérieur est présentement en construction et sera inauguré en novembre 2011. Un deuxième bassin olympique, répondant aux plus hautes normes internationales en natation, s’ajoutera au bassin actuel formant un véritable centre aquatique régional. Un amphithéâtre gymnase, unique dans la région de Québec et de conception avant-gardiste, permettra de tenir des compétitions d’envergure, notamment le Challenge Bell, des spectacles, des téléthons.

De nouvelles salles d’entraînement pourvues d’équipements modernes serviront à la population en général ainsi qu’aux athlètes de haut niveau. Pour sa part, le stade extérieur, pierre angulaire du PEPS de par sa fréquentation et les événements qu’on y tient, bénéficiera d’améliorations majeures. Des locaux pour la régie technique, des locaux pour la presse, des services alimentaires y seront ajoutés, ainsi qu’un système d’éclairage permettant de maximiser son utilisation.

Le PEPS, complexe sportif unique capable d’accueillir tant le sport récréatif que le sport de haut niveau, des compétitions régionales, nationales et internationales, contribue indéniablement à l’essor du sport et au bien-être de la population de la région.

PEPS

Université Laval’s Physical Education and Sport’s Pavilion (PEPS) was inaugurated in 1971. Built and financed in large part thanks to an institutional investment, its initial function was to focus on teaching and research, as well as to satisfy the needs of the members of the university community in terms of sports and physical activities.

Soon after, the university began to co-operate with various organizations in the area in order to host and organize major sporting and non-sporting events.  As a true leader in the areas of awareness-building, education, and the practice of sport and physical activity, PEPS is an important component on the regional sports scene and is recognized as a reference all over the country.    

For close to 40 years now, PEPS has been offering diverse programs that cater to the needs of people of all ages. With its five gymnasiums (one of them being a triple gym), a covered stadium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a training gym and weight room, tennis courts, an outdoor driving range, soccer fields, a football field, volleyball courts, as well as skating rinks and various other facilities, this sports complex is an obvious choice for the regular practice of physical activity and sport.    

PEPS INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION PROJECT

Because of an exceptional increase in the number of people practicing certain sports in the last few years, and because of an increase in demand in regard to special events, whether they be sport-related or not, PEPS will be enlarging its surface area from now until the beginning of 2013. 

Facilities for high level sport will respond to these increasing needs. An indoor soccer and football centre is presently being built, and will be inaugurated in November 2011. In order to correspond to the highest international swimming standards, a second Olympic-sized pool will be paired with the old one to create a veritable regional aquatic centre. An amphitheatre-gymnasium, unique in its kind with its cutting edge design, will allow the hosting of major events, notably the Bell Challenge, shows, and telethons.    

New weight rooms equipped with modern facilities will be offered to the population at large as well as to high level athletes. As for the outside stadium, which is one of PEPS’ cornerstones due to the events held there and to its high volume of visitors, it will also be improved. A new control room, areas for the press only, food services, and a lighting system that will optimize the establishment’s use will all be added to the complex.

PEPS, a unique sports complex that welcomes both recreational and high level sport, as well as regional, national, and international competitions, undeniably contributes to the  flourishing of sport and to the well-being of the people living in the region.
